Here's where to start!

To maximize the reduction in your utility bill and the benefit to reducing global warming, focus your efforts on the rooms where you spend the most time and use the highest wattage bulbs.  Based on my experience, here's where you should focus your efforts:

1.
Kitchen, Family Room & Entertainment Areas (60% of lighting power consumption)
 
   These are the rooms where you spend the most time and use the highest wattage bulbs

    Overhead lighting:
    Standard: 65, 75 or 100 watt
    Suggested replacement with a 16 or 23 watt CFL bulb

    Overhead lighting with R30 flood lights:
    Suggested replacement with a 16 or 23 watt R30 CFL bulb

    General overhead lighting & lamps:
    Standard: 60, 75 or 100 watt
    Suggested replacement with a 13 or 23 watt CFL bulbs

    General overhead lighting & lamps on 3-way or dimmer switches:
    Standard: 60, 75, or 100 watt
    Suggested replacement with a 13 or 23 watt CFL bulbs

2. Bedrooms, Bathrooms and Hallways (30% of lighting power consumption)
    You spend less time here and use lower wattage bulbs

   
    Bathroom lighting
    Standard: 25 or 40 watt Globes
   
Suggested replacement with a 6 or 9 watt CFL globe bulbs

    Lamps for accent lighting:
    Standard: 40 or 60 watt
    Suggested replacement with a 8 or 13 watt CFL bulbs

   
   
General overhead lighting & lamps on 3-way or dimmer switches:
    Standard: 60, 75, or 100 watt
    Suggested replacement with a 13 or 23 watt CFL 3 way dimmer bulbs


    Hallway, bathroom or specialized lighting
    Standard: 25 or 40 watt
    Suggested replacement with 9 watt spiral CFL bulbs
    Suggested replacement with 9 watt torpedo CFL bulbs
  
    Hallway, bathroom or specialized lighting (Candelabra base)
    Standard: 25 or 40 watt candelabra base
    Suggested replacement with 9 watt spiral candelabra CFL bulbs
    Suggested replacement with 9 watt torpedo candelabra CFL bulbs
    Suggested replacement with 4 watt candelabra base CFL bulb
   
Suggested replacement with 2 watt candelabra base CFL bulb

3. Garage, Workspace, and Outdoors (10% of lighting power consumption)
    These are spaces used infrequently and that use low wattage bulbs


    Low power lighting:
    Standard: 40, 60, or 75 watt
    Suggested replacement with a 8 or 13 watt CFL bulbs


    General overhead lighting & lamps:
    Standard: 60, 75 or 100 watt
    Suggested replacement with a 13 or 23 watt CFL bulbs

    High power lighting:
    Standard:250, 300, or 500 watt bulbs
    Suggested replacement with a 65 watt CFL bulb (250 watt equivalent)
    Suggested replacement with a 105 watt CFL bulb (500 watt equivalent)
