LittleGreenBulb is a project to show the difference that a single household (mine!) can make by adopting energy efficient CFL bulbs, educate people about the benefits of CFL bulbs in general and help drive the replacement of one million traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulbs.  The goal behind this is to help quickly reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being generated and reduce our impact on climate change.

What impact would one million new CFL bulbs have over a year? 
 1. Save people $13.6 million dollars on their utility bills
 2. Prevent the release of 221,000,000 pounds of CO2 greenhouse gas
 3. A CO2 (greenhouse gas) reduction equivalent to taking 19,217 cars off the road

So how big of a difference can you make? It turns out you can make a pretty big difference.  In our home we’ve replaced 44 bulbs and reduced our electric bill by over 24%.  To reach the one million bulb goal, roughly 25,000 homes would need to make a similar level of commitment.  Frankly, we should be able to do much more.  Imagine what the impact would be if you could get a million homes to make the same commitment.  Here’s a chart showing the impact energy efficient CFL bulbs have made on our utility bill.



Notes: We started replacing incandescent bulbs in February 2007 and continue to replace the few remaining bulbs (we still have 14 left).  We average a 20% reduction in our utility bill due to CFL bulbs with the peak month of November showing a 35% savings.
